Mike "Q" Quaintance, Chamber President
The act of communication is probably one of the most difficult activities that each of us experiences daily. I know when my wife Bonnie starts talking about what's on my to-do list for the upcoming weekend; I immediately fantasize a large roll of duct tape, a rope around a body tied to a chair, and a hood, but I am not sure what the look on my face says. How many times have you made the fatal mistake of letting your facial expressions speak for you? BTW, I think what she is really asking is, "What are we going to do together this weekend?"
Then there is the other one the bites you in the tail, E-MAIL, UGH. I can remember the first call I got when I accidentally sent an email typed in all caps. The recipient called me in a confrontational way asking "Why are you yelling at me?" How many of you have sent an email while you are upset? The thing about sending emails while you are upset is that people can read them over and over again. I've been there and done that, and I will probably do that again, but more often then not, a good old fashion face-to-face discussion is still the best method to work out any differences.
How about when you are working diligently at your work station, trying to write your monthly news article and a member of your team invades your dome of silence for an issue that is important to them? What if you continue typing and try to carry on a conversation? It is kind of interesting, but have you noticed that words and phrases from the conversation end up in your news article? My experience has taught me that I can either stop typing and listen or ask them to give me a moment so that I can finish my thoughts. By continuing to type and talk, I just send the message that I am selfish and that their issue is unimportant.
Have you ever had a conversation with someone that likes to tell a story filled with a lots of detail and less then pertinent information? Bingo, my wife can be that way and if I really want to get her fired up, I just say, "Executive Summary Please". If you'd like a more tactful way to handle this perhaps saying, "So how does this story end?"
I have had the privilege of meeting several great communicators, but for many of us it is a program of lifetime education. Why? It is often due to changing technology and lifestyles. Programs such as Toastmasters, Dale Carnegie, or communication courses offered by Edison, Barry, Hodges and FGCU are great options for improving skills. You can learn all about sender and receivers and interference. Don't underestimate the importance and value of good communications. Be a life long learner and go back to school!

There is no substitute for blood. It has to come from one person in order to give to another. A critical number of voluntary donations are required every day to meet the need for blood in the areas we server. However, we are consistently falling short, and falling short means we may not have enough blood for someone like you.If you have any questions about donating blood, please contact Florida's Blood Centers or visit their Web site at www.floridasbloodcenters.org. If you have any questions about the blood drive, contact [Site Coordinator] at cso@capecoralchamber.com.
