Cape Elementary Odyssey of the Mind
Teams Compete at Sun Region
Tournament |
|
Students use
teamwork and creative problem-solving skills to develop
presentations for judges Cape
Coral, FL, March 1,
2008: Seven teams
of Cape Elementary students competed on March 1st in the Sun
Region Odyssey of the Mind Tournament at Cypress Lake High
School. These
students had worked on their solutions to a long-term problem
since September, and presented the results to judges. They competed with
over 150 teams representing schools from Collier County to
Sarasota.
Cape
Elementary has participated
in Odyssey of the Mind for many years, and consistently does
well at the Regional and State levels. This year was no
exception, as the school garnered six awards. Teams are judged
within their age category (Elementary, Middle, and High
School) and one of five team-selected long-term problems. Top honors went to
Cape Elementary's DinoStories team, as they came out in first
place in the middle school division. Other awards went to
teams competing in the elementary school division. The DinoStories team
also earned an Outstanding OMer's Award, marking exceptional
teamwork and sportsmanship.
Odyssey of the
Mind is a creative problem-solving program designed for
students in Kindergarten through college. Teams of five to seven
students form in September to begin work on a long-term
problem. These
problems range in content from building a vehicle to creating
works of art to building a structure out of balsa wood
designed to hold as much weight as possible. Students doing well at
the Regional tournament will advance to the State Finals, held
in Orlando on April 5th.
Three of Cape Elementary's teams, including teams
competing in DinoStories, Classics, The Wonderful Muses, and
The Eccentrics, will be advancing to the state
level.
Cape
Elementary's Odyssey teams
have worked tirelessly for months, have performed well at the
Regional tournament.
They are seeking sponsors to assist in sending their
teams to Orlando in April.

We invite you to join
the Cape Coral community in the continuing battle against
cancer as a 2008 Sponsor for the American Cancer Society's
Relay for Life. This event will provide an effective way for
you to reach your market while helping create awareness about
cancer.
May we count on your
corporate support this year? Over the last six (6) years, with
the help of our sponsors and the community, the Cape Coral
Relay raised
$ 1,092,316.00 for the fight against
cancer.
The American Cancer
Society conducts Relay for Life throughout the United States.
Six years ago Relay for Life became the country's biggest
single fundraising event. Relay for Life is not just about
raising dollars: the aspect of community, survivorship and
caring is a combination unique to the American Cancer
Society.
This year's event will
be held at Mariner High School on April 4&5, 2008. The
theme is "Movie Magic". Cancer survivors are invited to
begin the Relay by walking the Survivor's Lap. Then members of
the teams take the track throughout the entire 18 hours. A
Luminary Ceremony is held where candles are lit in remembrance
of those who have lost their battle with cancer and in honor
of survivors.

Chamber Member Web Link
(Hyperlink) Policy Goes Into Affect April 30,
2008
Stephanie Roberson,
Technology Director
The Chamber of
Commerce of Cape Coral has provided to each member since the
Chamber's first website, a complimentary web links (hyperlink)
with each of the membership listings. These web links allow
visitors to the Chamber website and its members to hop from
the Chamber website and the member information to the member's
websites. Many of
the surrounding community Chamber's of Commerce charge an
annual fee for this same service.
Initially, we
requested that members who had a web link on the Chamber sight
include the Chamber logo on their site with a hyperlink back
to the Chamber.
That worked moderately well but the Chamber did not
have the resources to make sure our members were
complying.
Now that search
engines are using the number of hyperlinks as a tool for
search engine placement, we find it necessary to ask each
member who has their website information in their individual
business listing on the Chamber website to place a hyperlink
somewhere in their website directing traffic back to the
Chamber at www.capecoralchamber.com. The Chamber Board of
Directors took this action by a unanimous Board vote on
June
26, 2007 at their regular
monthly meeting.
If for some reason you are not able to comply with this
request you may lose the privilege of having the Chamber link
going to your website.
As the Chamber
has invested in new software and created a full time position
for Internet Management we have the resources to determine who
will be in compliance.
Time is running out. The compliance date to have a
reciprocal hyperlink is April 30th. If you are not
in compliance by this date, you will loose this privilege and
be given the option to either comply, or purchase a link for
an annual fee of $100.
What this
accomplishes is more web activity for the Chamber website due
to better placement on the website as well as increase
activity and placement for you with the search engines. We know that the
better job we do managing and developing the website the
greater the rewards for all members. We appreciate your
support and attention to this matter.
If you'd like to
learn more about the Chamber website, obtain your passwords
for the member's only section on the Chamber website, or
inquire about anything regarding the website, please contact
Stephanie Roberson, Technology Director at (239)
